Ask Your Pharmacist: Everyday Health Questions You’re Probably Googling
As a pharmacist, I’m often asked questions that don’t quite feel “doctor-visit worthy,” yet still matter in daily life. These are the real-world concerns people bring up at the pharmacy counter, during consultations, or after trying to piece together answers online.
The truth? Pharmacists are trained for exactly these moments—connecting symptoms, medications, supplements, and lifestyle in a way that actually makes sense.
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions I hear—and how I typically guide patients through them.
Any “Secret Sauce” for Getting Rid of a Cough?
There’s no single magic fix for a cough, but understanding why you’re coughing makes all the difference.
Pharmacist insight:
- Dry, tickly coughs are often due to irritation or lingering inflammation after a virus.
- Wet or congested coughs usually mean mucus needs thinning—not suppressing.
What often helps:
- NAC (N-acetylcysteine) can be particularly helpful for productive coughs by thinning mucus, making it easier to clear from the airways.
- Hydration and warm fluids are foundational—mucus can’t thin if you’re dehydrated.
- Honey (1–2 teaspoons) can soothe throat irritation and calm cough reflexes (not for children under 1 year).
- Humidified air, especially at night, can reduce airway irritation.
If a cough lingers more than a few weeks, worsens, or interferes with sleep, it’s worth digging deeper—many chronic coughs have very fixable causes.
How Do I Fly With Clogged or Sensitive Ears?
Pressure changes during takeoff and landing can cause ear pain, fullness, or muffled hearing—especially if you’re congested.
Pharmacist-approved tips:
- Use a saline nasal spray before boarding and again before descent.
- If appropriate for you, a decongestant taken 30–60 minutes before landing can help equalize pressure.
- Chewing gum, swallowing, or yawning activates the muscles that open the Eustachian tubes.
- Pressure-regulating earplugs can be surprisingly effective for frequent flyers.
If you have high blood pressure, heart conditions, or are on certain medications, this is a moment where individualized guidance really matters.
First Thing I Suggest for Flu-Like Symptoms
(From a virus—or even after a vaccination)
Flu-like symptoms—fever, chills, body aches, fatigue—often reflect an activated immune system doing exactly what it’s designed to do.
My first advice:
- Rest without guilt. Immune responses are energy-intensive.
- Hydration first, before layering in medications or supplements.
- Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen thoughtfully, based on your health history.
- Avoid stacking multiple OTC products “just in case.”
- Something I often recommend is Oscillococcinum, especially when started early. While evidence is mixed, many people find it helpful for supporting flu-like symptoms, and it’s generally well tolerated when used as directed.
If symptoms are severe, prolonged, or worsening, that’s your cue to check in rather than push through.
Best Strategies for Controlling a Fever
A fever can feel alarming, but it’s often part of the body’s normal immune response.
Pharmacist perspective:
- Treat the person, not just the number on the thermometer.
- Acetaminophen or ibuprofen both work well when used appropriately—the better choice depends on liver, kidney, stomach health, and other medications.
- Stay well hydrated; fevers increase fluid needs.
- Alternating fever reducers should only be done if you’ve been clearly instructed how to do so safely.
Persistent or unusually high fevers—or those accompanied by concerning symptoms—should always be evaluated further.
Have a Surgery or Procedure on the Books?
How to Prepare (Pharmacist Edition)
Pre-op instructions often focus on what to stop—but preparation is also about supporting recovery.
Important things to review ahead of time:
- All medications and supplements, even those that seem harmless.
- Supplements with blood-thinning effects may need to be stopped in advance, including:
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Curcumin/turmeric
- Timing is individualized and worth discussing.
Additional prep considerations:
- Some people start Arnica pellets a few days before surgery to help reduce post-procedure bruising and swelling.
- Prioritize protein intake, hydration, and sleep in the weeks leading up to surgery.
- Plan ahead for pain management and constipation prevention, especially if opioids are expected.
This is one of the most valuable moments for pharmacist involvement—particularly when prescriptions and supplements overlap.
Why Ask Your Pharmacist?
Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to connect the dots between medications, supplements, symptoms, and everyday life. We’re accessible, evidence-based, and often underutilized.
At Pharm to Table Consulting, my work goes beyond “what to take” and focuses on how everything fits together—so medications and supplements support your health rather than complicate it.
A Thought to Leave You With
If you’ve ever wondered:
- Is this actually helping?
- Should I be taking these together?
- Do I need to stop this before surgery—or start something earlier?
That’s an Ask Your Pharmacist moment.
Having your own dedicated consultant pharmacist on your team means you don’t have to guess, Google, or crowd-source decisions that affect your health. Thoughtful guidance—at the right time—can make everyday situations feel far more manageable.
If this resonated, you’re exactly who I work with.
